What we know about Beyoncé’s Netflix documentary, ‘Homecoming’ - The Washington Post

Beyoncé became the first black woman to headline Coachella, and now her 2018 performance will be the subject of a Netflix documentary premiering April 17.

"Homecoming" will provide "an in-depth look at Beyoncé's celebrated 2018 Coachella performance from creative concept to cultural movement," according to Netflix. The streaming giant released a trailer Monday that features behind-the-scenes footage from rehearsals, as well as a rare shot of what appears to be Rumi and Sir, Beyoncé and Jay-Z's twins.

Just as she's known for her elaborate stage designs and fierce dance moves, Beyoncé is also characterized by keeping massive projects a secret right up until they're about to be released. While a documentary special of the Coachella concert isn't entirely surprising, Netflix's Sunday announcement was the first time we learned of its existence.

Dubbed "Beychella" by DJ Khaled, the April 2018 headlining set attracted viewers worldwide via the Coachella live stream, which repeated the performance the following day. Since then, fans have had to content themselves with crowd videos to relive the entirety of the concert, which captivated social media and became the subject of countless essays.

"Beychella" became a stunning spectacle. Beyoncé's first major performance since giving birth to twins was essentially an ode to historically black colleges and universities and, more broadly, black culture, complete with a drum line, majorettes, step-dancing and a mock probate. More than a hundred dancers and musicians donned the Beyhive's signature colors, yellow and black, and flanked the singer as she moved from song to song, including "Lift Every Voice and Sing," commonly referred to as the black national anthem.

It was all even more remarkable given the setting. Coachella hasn't been particularly known for attracting a diverse crowd. (The day before Beyoncé headlined, Vince Staples referred to the Coachella main stage as "the white people stage.")

Following the performance, Beyoncé's mother wrote on Instagram that she had told her famous daughter that she was "afraid that the predominantly white audience at Coachella would be confused by all of the black culture and Black college culture because it was something that they might not get."

Beyoncé responded that she has "worked very hard" to get to a point where she has a "true voice" and that at this point in her life and career, she has "a responsibility to do what's best for the world and not what is most popular," Tina Knowles wrote. Beyoncé had hoped her performance would also inspire young people to enroll in HBCUs. (She subsequently started the Homecoming Scholars Award Program.)

The trailer Netflix released shows the documentary will likely get into the genesis of the performance, including the no-doubt-intense rehearsals to get the intricate dancer and musician formations so exact.

Beyoncé had initially expected to headline Coachella in 2017, but she had to back out because of her pregnancy. And it was during that performing hiatus that she came up with the concept for Coachella.

"I had time to dream and dream and dream with two beautiful souls in my belly, and I dreamt up this performance," she said mid-performance. "And this is more than I ever dreamt of it being. And thank you guys for sharing this with me. I hoped you all enjoyed the show. I worked very hard."

The Coachella performance also featured more traditional Beyoncé attire (sparkly leotards); a Destiny's Child reunion (Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland joined her onstage to sing "Say My Name" and "Soldier"); a Jay-Z cameo (for "Deja Vu"); and a sister dance-off with Solange to "Get Me Bodied."

"Homecoming" marks Beyoncé's first Netflix collaboration. HBO has previously aired her concert specials and documentaries, including 2016′s "Lemonade."

Lil Nas X Hints At Beyoncé Collaboration & The Beyhive Is Perplexed - HotNewHipHop

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 09:27 PM PDT

It's no arguing that Lil Nas X has been riding high as of late after the controversy surrounding his "Old Town Road" single has made him the topic of hip hop and country music conversations. After Billboard removed the single from country charts, Bill Ray Cyrus jumped on the remix, taking the song to #1 on the Billboard 100 chart.

Will Smith even got in on things by fusing clips of his Wild Wild West movie with "Old Town Road," telling Lil Nas X that he wants a feature in the remix's music video, should there ever be one. Hip hop artists across the board have lent their support for the rising star as they feel he's been shunned by Billboard, but is all his attention Beyoncé-worthy?

An hour ago, Lil Nas X tweeted a mysterious message that put the Beyhive's stingers on alert. "Ready to tell them @beyonce 😏🤨🙈🙈!?" he said. Just five minutes later, he tweeted a photo of two emojis: a smiling face with a cowboy hat and a snake. He shared that same emojis image earlier today on Instagram.

Meanwhile, Beyoncé fans are demanding an explanation. "This ain't true, don't let him play you!" one user wrote. "I would die," said another. "Lol Beyoncé probably just listened to his song that's it," said an unbeliever. Most commenters told him to stop playing with their emotions, but one person gave him fair warning that he should tread lightly when messing with these stans. "Dawg, the Beyhive [is] ruthless. Remember Keri Hilson. Don't speak on Bey's name if you ain't for real."

Do you think Bey would collaborate with Lil Nas X or is this just clout?

Beyoncé is reportedly working on a Netflix documentary and new solo music that will be released very soon...

Beyoncé is set to be real busy this Summer 2019 as she is releasing some new music and Netflix content. It has been revealed that Beyonce is working on some new solo tracks to follow up on her 2016 album, Lemonade.

In addition to Beyoncé's voice work as Nala in Disney's upcoming The Lion King live-action film, the superstar is also releasing Netflix content, unveiling never seen before footage of her Coachella performance.

In June 2018, Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z released their joint studio album 'Everything is Love'. But it's been three years since we have gotten a solo project from Yoncé.

According to a US Weekly, a source has revealed that Bey has recorded a "couple of new tracks [for] a deluxe album filled with old songs."

The source goes on to speak about the Netflix content and reveals that the documentary "will be tied to her Coachella 2018 performance" including additional and exclusive footage.

Beyoncé's Coachella performance is a highlight of 2018 for Bey and definitely a fans favourite performance from the superstar. The performance featured a staggering 26-song set list where she performed old songs and more recent ones.

Beyoncé was joined by Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland for a Destiny's Child reunion at Coachella. Beyoncé's sister Solange Knowles; and her husband Jay-Z also joined the star on stage at different points during her performance.

During Bey's Coachella performance, she had a proud moment and said to the audience:

"Thank you for allowing me to be the first black woman to headline Coachella."

Beyoncé's 2018 performance came one year after she was originally announced as a headliner in the 2017 line-up. However, her pregnancy with twins Sir and Rumi Carter led her to delay the performance by one year.

The "Hold Up" singer, revealed to her fans at Coachella:

"I'm so happy that I am here,". She continued "I was supposed to perform at Coachella [last year] but I ended up getting pregnant—thank God! So I had time to dream and dream and dream with two beautiful souls in my belly.…Thank you guys for sharing this with me. I hope y'all enjoyed the show."

Although she is reportedly releasing a Netflix special and new music, there is no official confirmation as of yet.

American Hero Shangela Performs Beyoncé Lip-Sync In Front Of Beyoncé - HuffPost

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Performing a Beyoncé medley while Beyoncé watches is like doing math in front of Archimedes or pumping iron in the presence of The Rock ― most would be too fearful to try.

And then there's "RuPaul's Drag Race" alum Shangela, who lip-synced for her life mere steps away from Queen Bey at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday night.

The drag performer and actor, flanked by crop-top sporting back-up dancers, paid tribute to Beyoncé with a seven-minute, expertly choreographed medley to some of the most beloved songs from the singer's catalog, including "Single Ladies," "Bootylicious" and "Flawless."

Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z were attending the ceremony to receive the Vanguard Award from the media watchdog and advocacy organization for their continued support of the LGBTQ community.

The "Everything Is Love" duo were seen clapping along to the medley from their seats and rose to their feet with the rest of the crowd after the performance was done.

The "Lemonade" artist even gave Shangela a shoutout during her speech, in which she shared a heartfelt story of a family member battling HIV.

"I've already cried," Beyoncé said onstage. "I put a run in my stocking from Shangela."

"Whether it's our fans or our family, the LGBTQI community has always supported us and lifted us up. And we thank you for that," she continued. "We are here to promote love for every human being, and change starts with supporting the people closest to you. So let's tell them they are loved, let's remind them they are beautiful, and parents, let's love our kids in their truest form."

Beyonce gets emotional at GLAAD Awards, honors gay uncle who died of HIV - USA TODAY

Beyonce paid an emotional tribute to her uncle, and Jay-Z to his mother, as they accepted the Vanguard Award at the GLAAD Media Awards (29 March). AP

LOS ANGELES – Beyonce got emotional Thursday night as she and husband Jay Z were honored for being allies to the LGBTQ community.

"We're here to promote love for every human being," said Beyonce, taking the stage at the GLAAD Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with Jay Z. "And change starts with supporting the people closest to you. So let's tell them they are loved. Let's remind them they are beautiful. Let's speak out and protect them. And parents, let's love our kids in their truest form."

Presented with GLAAD's Vanguard Award, Beyonce paid an emotional tribute to her late Uncle Johnny, "the most fabulous gay man I have ever known," she said.

Her uncle helped raise both her and sister Solange Knowles, she said. "He lived his truth. He was brave and unapologetic during a time when this country wasn't as accepting. And witnessing his battle with HIV was one of the most painful experiences I have ever lived," said Beyonce, choking up as Jay Z put his hand on her back. "I'm hopeful that his struggle served to open pathways for other people to live more freely."

"LGBTQI rights are human rights. To choose who you love is your human right," added the pop star, before quoting her own song, "Formation." "Who you make love to and take that (expletive) to Red Lobster is your human right." The crowd cheered.

Janet Mock and Lena Waithe were among those who toasted the couple at the event, where Sean Hayes was also honored and Gwyneth Paltrow served as a presenter. "When we heard your album '4:44' we all knew it was an instant classic, but the song 'Smile' made it revolutionary," said Waithe, referencing the track Jay Z featured his mother Gloria Carter on, revealing she is a lesbian.

"The line 'Love who you love because life isn't guaranteed' is a line I will never forget," Waithe continued, calling the tune "a modern day negro spiritual reminder to those in hiding that there's still time to make their way to freedom."

Still, it might have been Shangela who stole the whole night.

The famed drag performer delivered an epic Beyonce tribute performance, mimicking the pop star's choreography move for move.

And yes, Bey loved it.

"I'm overwhelmed. I've put a run in my stocking from Shangela," said Beyonce afterward, as the crowd roared.

Minimum Gauge: Beyoncé Steals the Coachella Spotlight Once Again with Netflix Special - Cincinnati CityBeat

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 11:42 AM PDT

Plus, Pete Buttigieg wrote an essay about Dave Matthews and Radiohead in college and people are still paying singer R. Kelly to perform (or at least to mingle)

Screen Shot20190408At12 48 49PMFrom the trailer for 'Homecoming'HOT: Spotlight Stealing Again

Beyoncé is getting in on that sweet, sweet Netflix money and releasing a film version of her set at last year's Coachella festival on the streaming service. The singer was the source of major chatter before 2017's Coachella after cancelling due to her pregnancy, then stole the show with her 2018 make-up appearance (a.k.a. "Beychella"), which featured dazzling staging and dozens of musicians and dancers. She's stealing some of the Coachella spotlight this year as well, with the Netflix special Homecoming dropping on April 17, right in the middle of the event's two weekends. In other "Knowles at Coachella" news, it was announced that Solange (Beyoncé's sister) has cancelled her appearances at this year's fest due to "major production delays."

WARM: Music Writer for President?

Beto O'Rourke made a good case to music snobs that he should be the Democratic candidate for president next election, quoting The Clash during a debate with Ted Cruz and once playing in a band with Cedric Bixler-Zavala of The Mars Volta. He even suggested he might try to get The Mars Volta to play his inauguration if he wins. But now fellow presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg might also have some appeal to those voting based on a candidate's music cred. Reporters have unearthed an essay in the Harvard student newspaper in which Buttigieg wrote (somewhat disappointedly) about how upbeat music like the Dave Matthews Band's fell out of favor and Radiohead became college-kid favorites in the wake of 9/11. The verdict on Buttigieg's writing generally seems to be, "not horrible."

COLD: Coming Back for Seconds

People are still paying singer R. Kelly to perform. Or at least to mingle. The one-time superstar is coming off of the latest round of sexual abuse charges and claims to be broke, so he took a gig — for an "appearance" at a club party in Springfield, Illinois. Post-event reports said that between 1:30 a.m. and 3 a.m., Kelly partied out with patrons and performed 28 seconds of one song. Tickets to get into the event were $100.

Rodg talks new album 'Fate,' future plans, technology and Beyoncé (Includes interview) - Digital Journal

Posted: 09 Apr 2019 02:03 PM PDT

On the song selection process for his latest studio offering, Rodg said, "I tried to build a bit of a story, something that builds up and sometimes takes a break to reset the vibe a little bit. Added some blissed out spherical records in there, and then just line the records upon how I thought they should've been lined up and listened to the selection. Did this for so many times till I had it completely right." He shared that the track "Over Town" sets an "unexpected vibe on the dance-floor" since it is quite "groovy." "I like 'Signs' as well, the response from the dance-floor when I was playing that one out was massive," he said. Regarding his plans for 2019, he said, "There will be lots of touring and making more new music. I am very happy to be able to play in one of my most favorite cities for the first time this year, New York City June 15." Rodg's music is inspired by "travel, good times with friends and family, other DJs and their DJ sets in totally different genres." Digital transformation of electronic dance music On the impact of technology on the electronic music industry, especially with streaming services taking over, Rodg said, "Technology is great, especially now Spotify being available in India, it gives people so much freedom to listen to all available music in a legal way." Regarding his use of technology in his daily routine as an electronic musician, Rodg said, "Electronic music is all about technology. It's great that technology makes me able to work on everywhere with my MacBook and a pair of headphones." Rodg listed Beyoncé as his dream female collaboration in the music business. "I did a bootleg for a Beyoncé record once. An original song from Beyoncé would be my dream collaboration," he said. For his fans, Rodg concluded about his album, "I happy I can share this with the world, and I hope you'll all like it." Fate is available for pre-order on iTunes. Billy Eichner Says Beyoncé Is So 'F------ Good' in The Lion King She Made Him Cry - PEOPLE.com

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Good news: Beyoncé is "definitely" in Disney's upcoming live-action The Lion King — and she's so good she made costar Billy Eichner cry.

Eichner appeared on Crooked Media's Keep It podcast, where host Ira Madison III jokingly expressed concerns about Beyoncé's role in the movie since she hadn't yet been seen in the trailers. The movie is set to hit theaters July 19.

"She's definitely in the movie because I've seen a rough cut. And I've heard her sing 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight?' with Donald Glover and I'm telling you, it's f— good," Eichner clarified.

He continued, "And that was never my favorite song to be totally honest…  I liked it when Elton John sang it. I love Elton John. I don't want to give too much away about that, they do not want us talking about it. I will just say that honestly, it made me cry and I was not expecting that."

Donald Glover stars as Simba while Beyoncé takes on his childhood friend and eventual love interest Nala. The two lead a cast of heavy-hitters that includes Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timon and Pumba, respectively, and James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa after voicing him in the 1994 animated original.

"[Playing Timon is] shocking, it's bizarre, it's terrifying," Eichner admitted. "You can't really do it better than [Nathan Lane] did it, you can just do it your way."

He continues, "I will say one thing that helps with that is that my energy with Seth Rogen is very different, naturally, than what Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella's energy was. They were both coming out of the that production of Guys and Dolls when they did the Lion King. They did this very vaudevillian, Broadway, musical theater, borscht belt style, which here and there, Seth and I borrow from but we don't lean into that as much."

The Lion King also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Keegan-Michael Key, John Oliver, Alfre Woodard, John Oliver and Eric André.
