A blue star sapphire weighing 1,404.49 carats has been discovered in Sri Lanka - the largest ever found! The gem was mined in the city of Ratnapura, known and the city of gems. It has been valued at $100 million but could bring as much as $175 million at auction. The gem has been named the Star of Adam.
Star sapphires are unique in that they contain small inclusions in their structure that align in such a way that they reflect a magical six-pointed star. Blue star sapphires combine the wonder of the star pattern with celestial blue color for a heavenly mix.
How can a star sapphire grow to be 1,404.49 carats? For the gemstone to grow to this size, the temperatures and pressures in the earth would have changed only very slowly over millions and millions of years. After the gem formed, it sat within the rocks while they were uplifted into mountains, which then eroded. It was brought to the surface and picked out of the rock by the forces of rain and weathering after which it was transported down river to the gem sands of Ratnapura.
